Friday 10 March was the last day I donned my full blue SCGS girl uniform.

The full blue uniform was given to me by my mum 10 years ago. It has been 10 years and wearing that uniform has been part of my life, like a past time. Throughout those 10 years, the uniform grew bigger as I grew older and matured along the way. There were periods of time I didn't feel comfortable wearing it, thinking to myself 'why must it be sleeveless, bare so much skin!!!' or 'why is the belt so high, makes me look unproportionate!!!'. (But judging how teen girls dress nowadays, I think SC uniform is still conservative.)

I used to envy other uniforms which I felt were more unique but common. Gradually, I grew to love my uniform, for being one of a kind, for being daring, for being me. 10 years of memories in 1 uniform. Memories of banner painting sessions when you stain your blue skirt, memories of tiffs with friends, memories of the joy shared when you class wins chinese talentime or cheer competitions, memories of guides and all the camps. How many people have that?

The best thing I love about the SCGS uniform is that it makes you stand out of the crowd wherever you are. Haha, partly because it is sleeveless (and not white or green). But it's blue colour is easy to spot and bringing along with it is a good reputation of the school whereby you get respect from members of the public. And of course, it encompasses the values of an SCGS girl. Sincerity, Courage, Generosity & Service. Ms Heng once said that SCGS girls can spot each other even in public, like there is an imaginary chop which says 'SCGS' on your forehead. Perhaps it's our behaviour, our actions and the way we speak.

The SC uniform is also convenient. For example, in a hot and humid country in Singapore, the lack of sleeves saves you from fainting from the intense heat. Also, we have a seperate PE uniform that does not require SC girls to scramble to the toilets to change when PE lessons come but to just simply remove the bottom half skirt.

The blue uniform will remain in some corner of my closet for some time now. And maybe 10-15 years later, it'll be dug out to see the light again, for the next generation to wear to school. Though I'll be wearing a different uniform to school now, everything I have learnt throughout these 10 years in SCGS will always be with me. Because once an SCGS girl, always an SCGS girl. And that will never change.
